Doing it for the Babies May 2011 Print this page

The owners of Pilequip Australia P/L have long had a heart-felt interest in providing life-saving medical equipment for sick and premature newborn babies.  Mark & Fiona Hellyer have a beautiful, healthy teenage daughter thanks to the specialized care of a NICU unit, whilst Brett & Fran Camm had a little baby boy who was also the recipient of wonderful care by a NICU unit.  Sadly, little “Scottie” passed away after only 5 short, precious days of life in 1996.

Out of this desire of wanting to provide life-saving equipment, Pilequip approached the Children’s Hospital, Westmead and The Grace Centre for Newborn Care at Westmead Hospital to see what equipment was most needed by their NICU’s.  We were informed that both units required “transport specialised intensive care humidicribs”, and that this need was first identified as far back as 1996.  (Note : a “transport specialised intensive care humidicrib” enables sick newborn babies to travel between the NICU and operating theatres, and allows access for surgeons and specialists to perform life-saving operations, all within the one controlled environment, eliminating the potential for infection etc).

So Pilequip now had a fund-raising goal.  Brett decided to train for, and compete in a 70.3 Ironman event (the Australian 70.3 Ironman Championships in Port Macquarie on 01 May 2011), as a physical challenge and motivation for the fund-raising, and to raise awareness for the Cause.  Pilequip approached international Piling Equipment manufacturers, as well as local Suppliers and Contractors to support our fund-raising, and in return receive advertising on the race shirt.

Friends and family also got involved, physically and financially.  Brett’s training partner & neighbour, Ben Jackson, joined “the team” offering to raise funds, as well wear a Supporters race shirt in the race, and help Brett with his training.

Nine months after Brett started his training for the 70.3 Ironman, the race day arrived.  Pilequip had reached its fund-raising goal of $75,000, and was able to provide finance for the two transport specialised intensive care humidicribs.  Brett successfully completed the 70.3 Ironman, and performed so well in his age group that he was selected by Ironman Australia to represent Australia at the World 70.3 Ironman Championships being held in Las Vegas in September 2011.

Brett would like to thank everyone that supported this Cause, and especially Pilequip for matching the support given by other businesses and colleagues, and ASX (Ben’s employer) for matching his fund-raising.

Also, Brett & Fran would like to give a big personal thank you to the Children’s Hospital, Westmead NICU and The Grace Centre for Newborn Care for offering to name these cribs “Scottie I” & “Scottie II”, in honour of our precious boy, such that his memory will now see many other babies live.  God bless.
